Carols By Cruiser
[Port Hacking Estuary, Sutherland Shire] Every year the Lions Club raises money for the Randwick Children's Hospital with a colourful flotilla cruising around the bays of Cronulla's Port Hacking. The flagship for the event is the T.S.M.V. Gunnamatta which hosts the carol singers on board. The local radio station 2SSR 99.7 FM broadcasts the choir so that all boats in the flotilla and homes on the waterfronts can tune in to listen and sing along to the carols. The procession, where possible hugs the shoreline, enabling family and friends out on the balconies to join in with the Christmas cheer. Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race Start
[The Heads, Sydney Harbour] Over the past 64 years, the Rolex Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race has become an icon of Australian summer sport. Participants from maxi yachts to weekend racers take part in this event, which began in 1945. The race start on Sydney Harbour attracts hundreds of spectator craft and hundreds of thousands of people lining the shore as helicopters buzz above the fleet, filming for TV around the world. Starting off Nielsen Park (Vaucluse) in Sydney Harbour at 1.00pm, the yachts start their 630 nautical mile journey by rounding The Heads and then heading south to Hobart. What began as a small community event has become an annual Sydney institution and sees more than 60,000 people compete in the world’s largest fun run. The course is 14km, starting at 9am from Park/College Streets and extending through the eastern suburbs down to the finish at Bondi Beach. Kogarah Fair & Charity Bed Race
